BOAT BUILDING PRODUCTS AND SERVICES
The Western Cape is South Africa's pre-eminent boat-building area. Whereas in 1993, only 65% of all South African boat-building companies were based in the region, today, the figure has risen to 75%. Western Cape companies account for as much as 87% of total industry turnover. Many of these Companies are new entrants, with 40% having entered the industry in the last five years. Three companies, Voyage Yachts, Southern Wind Shipyard and Robertson & Caine - account for 86% of total industry turnover in the Western Cape.

Most manufacturers see their relationship with subcontractors as an essential part of their business and attempt to establish long-term relationships with selected subcontractors. Major subcontract functions by Rand value include engines, masts, and sails. Approximately 60% of companies utilise between six and ten subcontractors, whereas 25% use between 11 and 15.

Local content constitutes approximately 60% of the total value of production, with the balance being imported. There are approximately 1600 people employed directly within the industry. Including subcontractors, the boat-building industry provides more than 2000 jobs.

A growing number of tasks are outsourced to contractors, reflecting an increasing division of labour within the industry. Typical areas of subcontractor involvement are: electrical, stainless steel, upholstery, mechanical fitting, masts and sails, design, valet and delivery.
